Description:

  1. Begin digging out existing Asphalt and Dirt in Culvert Area
  2. Remove Existing Culvert
  3. Excavate area to support new, larger culvert and rock application
  4. Set new culvert on base of dirt and rock to stabilize
  5. Apply more stone and GAB over culvert to stabilize driveway
  6. Patch asphalt in project area

Challenges:

When water flow is a problem, Spalding Concrete can always find a solution. A customer posed such a problem to us and we delivered. The water flow issue that the customer had was stemming from her pond and her existing culvert. During heavy rain a neighboring body of water has a tendency to drain into our customer's pond causing the level to rise and approximately 2 feet of runoff to occur on the customer's driveway. The original solution to this problem was a 12in culvert. This size piping did allow for some of the runoff to be circumvented, but it could not handle the entire load of the excess water. Our team of experienced professionals saw this problem and immediately knew the solution; a bigger culvert. Now with the solution in sight our team immediately got to work. We knew the culvert needed to be larger, but we also knew that the culvert couldn't go much lower that the existing water line. With several sizes and options available, and through careful deliberation with the customer, we were able to determine that a 30" metal culvert would be perfect for the job. Our team began to excavate the site, removing the asphalt, dirt, GAB, and finally the existing culvert. To accommodate for the size difference we determined we would have to shave a few inches off of the existing dirt at the waterline of the dirt where the culvert will sit. This allowed for additional flow and helped compensate for the excess runoff caused by the neighboring water source. We then added a thin base of stone to stabilize the new culvert. Our team then set and based in the new culvert. This set us up for the return visit where we will patch and compact the asphalt for an even finish.
