Description:

  1. Demolish and remove existing asphalt drive and failed concrete areas
  2. Remove any failed GAB areas
  3. Remove existing culvert
  4. Replace with new culvert
  5. Apply and Compact new GAB to grade along drive
  6. Apply and compact new hot mix asphalt
  7. Dress edges of asphalt with GAB
  8. Dress new culvert with type 3 rip-rap

Challenges:

Spalding Concrete was called out to this driveway due to issues surrounding both the existing drive and culvert. This was causing drainage and waterflow issues, effecting the customers ability to comfortably drive across the surface, and also caused excess water build up during rainy days. Our team saw the problems and immediately determined the best solution for the customer, while also fitting their budget. We immediately began the process of demolishing and removing the existing asphalt, while taking care to keep the shape and flow of the driveway. This allowed us to address any issues within the base, which were solved by swift removal. We also identified problems surrounding the currently installed culvert. We removed and replaced that as well, ensuring that we kept it along the same depth and slope as the previously installed culvert. With the failed asphalt, GAB and culvert removed we were able to begin replacing the aggregates. We began this process by applying and compacting new GAB along the drive, carefully ensuring that the water flow was maintained for appropriate drainage. Once compacted, we painted where the edge of the asphalt would be along the drive and began the paving process. This process was a smooth one, as our spreader make efficient and effective work of the mix, laying a smooth surface. We compacted the asphalt and moved on to dressing the drive and culvert. With the new GAB and asphalt laid to customer specifications, we began the process of beautifying the new drive. This process was achieved by using the remaining GAB to backfill and dress the edges, ensuring the GAB underneath the asphalt wouldn't undermine and cause premature erosion of the new asphalt drive. This also assisted in creating a more uniform look on the edges, beautifying the end result and taking the project to the next level for the customer. We also used type 3 rip-rap stone to dress the culvert, creating additional stability around the pipe and achieving that classic culvert look.
